Canadian Steve Holt Finalist in USA Songwriting Competition
TORONTO, Nov. 27 /CNW/ - Canadian singer-songwriter Steve Holt has been
named as one of the finalists in the USA Songwriting Competition(R), it was
announced today. Mr. Holt is among ten finalists in the Latin category with
his song "Soon". Winners will be announced December 4. The USA Songwriting
Competition is the world's leading international songwriting competition,
featuring songwriters, composers, and recording artists from around the globe.
Judges include music representatives from Warner Music, Disney Music
Publishing, Sony Music and other industry leaders. Only three Canadians have
ever won a category in the competition, including Shirley Eikhard, Ari Posner,
and Alex O'Brien.
"Soon" was released on Mr. Holt's recent CD entitled "The Dream", along
with eight other new songs and two covers. "The Dream" is Mr. Holt's first
recording as a vocalist and songwriter, and was produced by engineer/producer
Darius Szczepaniak (Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden, Chantal Kreviazuk). Previous
recordings featured Mr. Holt as a jazz pianist and composer. He was nominated
for a JUNO award in 1983 for his debut album "The Lion's Eyes".
Born in Montreal, Mr. Holt studied music at McGill University and
graduated with distinction as McGill's first-ever Bachelor of Music majoring
in Jazz performance. He began his professional career playing clubs in Quebec
and then relocated to Toronto several years later. Until the end of 1999, Mr.
Holt wore two very distinct hats: He was a top-ranked Bay Street analyst
specializing in entertainment and consumer companies and listed in Canadian
"Who's Who", while at the same time he built an international reputation as a
renowned jazz pianist. However, in November 1999 Mr. Holt left the Bay Street
career altogether and crossed over into adult contemporary music with the
making of his 6th recording "The Dream".
